thelittlebirdthatkeptsomanywarm:

I’ve made a storify based on conversation I had on sexism in the media:

I read an article called “Women tennis players have trouble making friends” and continued to have a rage blackout and lots of thoughts about female athletes and how they’re (mostly miss-) treated by the media and how sexist stereotypes influence their perception. Luckily I have some great twitter friends who helped me piece together the arguments. If you want to read it, see the link below, but frankly it’s not worth giving the author pageviews except for a nice quote by Andrea Petkovic towards the end.

That article - and basically all media dialogue about women’s tennis - makes me froth with rage, but seeing intelligent discussion of all the ways it’s stupid and problematic make me feel better.

killing-all-the-flies:

Don’t know if anybody watched the Wimbledon final today but Andy Murray’s speech at the end was so heartwarming!

I’m not usually into tennis, wimbledon or sport in general really and wasn’t a big fan of Andy Murray but his speech! :O

I felt so, so sorry for him. It made me really proud to be British though, he did fantastically and I think that speech will be one of those things you see repeated in sports montages and the like for years to come.

It’s made me pretty excited for the Olympics now anyway, I really hope there’s some moments like that throughout them too.

Reblogging for the commentary, which is really sweet and makes me feel a bit better about poor Andy. <333

He sometimes hides it from the press, but his interaction with his peers and stuff like this shows what a great person and sportsman he is. I’m very proud of his and his excellent performance at this tournament.
